Course Catalog Description
An examination of performance as an aspect of cultural production, ranging from everyday-life enactment to more formal or aesthetic activities associated with "artistic" production; may involve visiting artists. Specific attention to the methods of ethnography, cultural studies, and intercultural performance analysis. Topics vary from semester to semester.
Class Description
This course focuses on Latine/Latinx American theatre while we tackle one of the most perilous problems of the 21st century: cultural imperialism. What is cultural imperialism and how do artists confront its incumbent effects on climate change, immigration, and domestic life in the Americas? We will read plays of the 20th and 21st centuries from artists and theater collectives in Mexico, Peru, Colombia, Guatemala, Venezuela, Argentina, and the US/Canada/Turtle Island to examine the social and historical effects of imperialism. Through characters and scenarios of these plays we will learn how communities resist, heal, and plan for different, more liberatory futures. Our seminar lab space will allow us to stage readings and hold workshop exercises to expand capacities for creative exploration and research. Students will be expected to write a final paper and will have access to resources and in-depth analysis of imperialism from critical perspectives around the world.
