Course Catalog Description

Reading and composition in connection with the representation of Scandinavia by outsiders and insiders. Satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement.

Class Description

This course explores short narrative forms in Scandinavia from the 19th century to the present day. Through our study of short stories, we will trace the historical development of key narrative techniques and thematic concerns, while also comparing the different national traditions. In addition to gaining insights into Scandinavian literature and culture, we will analyze the short story as a distinct narrative form in modernity. Some authors included will be HC Andersen, Selma Lagerlöf, Halldór Laxness, and Cora Sandel.
