Course Catalog Description
An introduction to practical reasoning and the critical analysis of argument. Topics treated will include: definition, the syllogism, the enthymeme, fallacies, as well as various non-logical appeals. Also, the course will treat in introductory fashion some ancient and modern attempts to relate rhetoric and logic.
Class Description
This course surveys attempts of varied thinkers to respond to and debate the forms of and weaknesses they find in reasoning and argument. These weaknesses were often linked to failures in accounting for and overcoming human or cultural limitations. Appreciation of these limitations was repeatedly seen as essential to avoiding and overcoming error and finding a proper ground for knowledge. Though much of the course proceeds chronologically, from the period often referred to as the “Scientific Revolution” to the twentieth century, modules generally discuss modern commentators and invite more contemporary reflections.
