Course Catalog Description
Normally open only to Media Studies majors who have already completed 12 units of upper division work in the major. Advanced study in Media Studies with topics to be announced each semester.
Class Description
In this course we will combine theoretical analyses of video, music, cinema, sound, and image culture with an exploration of the histories of music video production, distribution, and consumption. We will consider how the music video form revolutionized the culture industries by contributing new visual symbols, production techniques, career paths, and opportunities for profit. Most importantly, we will investigate the ways music videos have impacted local, national, and global cultures and political discourses, in ways positive, disturbing, and unexpected. Lastly, we will of course work closely together to critically analyze a wide range of music videos from the 1970s through 2024.
