Course Catalog Description
H195 is a two-semester course that gives students the training they need to conduct original research and develop their findings into a successful scholarly essay, 40-60 pages in length.
Class Description
The first semester's work will help you decide on the kind of project you want to undertake. We'll consider differences between literary criticism and literary scholarship, the nature of their overlap, and models of each, along with some influential treatments of questions you'll be trying to answer for yourselves: How should we think of the purposes of criticism? What makes for good criticism? How should the criticism of literature relate to criticism of other arts? By the end of the semester you'll have decided on your topic and produced a short prospectus that articulates an insight you want to develop and a question you want to answer, the rudiments of a bibliography, and a bit of writing towards your thesis.
