Class Description
The concept of a hero has evolved over time, and the modern understanding of a hero may differ
significantly from the classical or traditional definitions. In modern culture, a hero is often seen as
someone who is admired for their courage, selflessness, and noble qualities, and who is willing to take
risks or make sacrifices in order to help others or achieve a noble goal” (Cambridge, 2022). In this
course, students will explore the representation of “the modern hero” through the lens of the CW show
Supernatural. With horror, comedy, and biblical elements, the crosscultural genre of the show is able to
capture the diversity and mythological weight of Ancient Greek Epics and Tragedies through a modern
scope. Weekly episodes will be paired to relevant readings regarding the mythological and literary
connections behind the episodes. Students will learn to “close read” symbols in television, and analyze
literary allusions through the visual medium.
