Class Description
This class introduces the rich archaeological heritage of Egypt, its geography, and social history through a detailed analysis of material culture and technologies. Topics include ancient water and agricultural technology, construction techniques, metallurgy, textiles, mummification, long-distance trading and cross-cultural interaction, and astronomy. The course illustrates how these technologies are interwoven to construct society.
As the saying goes, “Archaeology is the most humanistic of sciences and the most scientific branch of the humanities.” Our approach integrates humanities and sciences into Egyptian archaeology, emphasizing indigenous archaeological theories to amplify native voices to their heritage and material cultures that shaped their society. We highlight ancient technologies' importance and contributions to ancient societies, and our modern sciences, making the study of archaeology relevant to current urgent needs.
