Course Catalog Description

This course is designed to provide students with a deeper understanding both of the organization of the political economy in the United States and of other advanced economies, and of why the distribution of earnings, wealth, and opportunity have been diverging in the United States and in other nations. It also is intended to provide insights into the political and public-policy debates that have arisen in light of this divergence, as well as possible means of reversing it.

Our undergraduate courses give priority enrollment to students who have officially declared the public policy minor prior to Spring 2023 registration. The Public Policy minor must be displayed on CalCentral for the enrollment system to qualify you for the reserved seats. The deadline to submit your minor application is on September 22nd to ensure that you’re declared by your Phase I appointment. Students may still apply after the deadline, but the reserved seats are no longer guaranteed.

Enrollment Guidelines:

- Majority of the seats are reserved to students declared in Public Policy minor. For the system to recognize you as a Public Policy minor, the minor should be displayed on your CalCentral.
- Enrollment is processed automatically until the 3rd week of instruction. Per instructors' request, the class might be closed for further enrollment earlier.
- During the 4th and 5th week of instruction, the waitlist will be processed manually by the department, with the priority going to students minoring in Public Policy.
- GSPP does not override time conflict.

For courses with discussion sections:
- A space must be available in both the lecture and the discussion section to be officially enrolled.
- Reserved seats only apply to the lecture, not the discussion section. Section seating is open and available to all.
- Students are recommended to add themselves to the waitlist if they are unable to find an open seat.
- Enrolled students can switch their section using CalCentral.**Note: Do not drop yourself to switch your discussion section.

**L&S manages their enrollment separately from Public Policy. If you're enrolled or waitlisted in L&S 180U, please contact fssp@berkeley.edu for more details.**

If you have enrollment questions, send an email to gsppscheduler@berkeley.edu and we'll respond as soon as we can. show less
