Course Catalog Description
Emphasis on the literature and culture of the 13th and 14th centuries. Literature will emphasize the "Stil Novo" and Dante's minor works as well as Boccaccio's <Decameron> and Petrarch's <Rime>.
Class Description
This course will present Dante's Purgatory as a model for thinking globally about the space of the island and the stories it tells. We'll explore Dante's island and its representation of nature, its emphasis on the in-between state and human connectivity, and the poetic creation of unexpected stories and encounters. We'll then launch into explorations of other island voices, from Shakespeare's Tempest to Caribbean poets like Derek Walcott and Lorna Goodison to the television show Lost.
