Course Catalog Description
English drama to 1603.
Class Description
In this class, we'll study the roots and the flowering of England's greatest and most peculiar art form, the public drama. We'll begin with the communal, participatory spectacles of the medieval era, the "mystery plays" that drew Biblical history into the present day. We'll consider how these medieval, popular precedents interacted with elite study of Greek and Roman comedy and tragedy on the first professional stages. And we'll see how the great rivalry of Marlowe and Shakespeare transformed those elements to create gigantic new possibilities for the art of theater.
This class satisfies the pre-1800 requirement for the English major. It does not fulfill the Shakespeare requirement.
