In grad school, we are often trained in theory first. We would typically then develop a set of theoretical ideas and decide on our research topic and questions. In this formulation, methods are often treated as an afterthought, or a practical skill one needs to acquire, largely divorced from theory. Yet, methods are inherently theoretical. They carry ontological, ethical, epistemological, and political implications, which profoundly shape the purpose, process, and outcome of our research. The seminar has three goals. First, to expose students to theoretical foundations, epistemological and methodological considerations, and current trends in qualitative research as applied to humanistic social sciences. Second, to provide an opportunity for students to practice key methods and techniques in qualitative research. Third, to explore the intersections between social theory, research questions, and methods through the development of a research proposal. Prior research experience using qualitative methods is a plus, but not required. The seminar is intended for advanced graduate students.
