Class Description
This course will encompass a holistic view of menstruation through four units of study: Science of Menstruation, Period Poverty & Stigma, Menstruation Culture & History, and Taking Action. We will discuss the phases of menstruation, along with exploring the hormonal methods of birth control and the transition to menopause. Then, we will explore legislation and social issues surrounding menstruation, like access to menstrual products and the Tampon Tax, both in the US and abroad. We will continue by discussing various cultural practices surrounding menstruation, tracing the development of menstrual products, and diving into a myriad of myths surrounding menstruation. We will conclude the course by learning about current activism in the menstrual sphere, along with ways to avoid performative activism. By engaging in meaningful discussion and lectures, this course hopes to build an understanding of menstruation on Cal’s campus. Due to the nature of this course, some of the subjects we discuss may be sensitive to some people. We hope to build a close knit community based on guidelines of respect, trust, kindness, and shared scholarship in this course to facilitate discussion of difficult topics. However, if you ever feel the need to leave class or miss a day due to sensitive subject matter, please reach out to the facilitators.
