Hours & Workload

3 hours of instructional experiences requiring special laboratory equipment and facilities per week, 1.5 hours of outside work hours per week, and 1.5 hours of instructor presentation of course materials per week.

Laboratory that accompanies 1A lecture course. Intended for biological science majors, but open to all qualified students.

Students must read the Required Enrollment Instructions completely before enrolling.

All seats are reserved for student 3 Terms and above through Phase 1 (through November 13th). Students 1-2 Terms in Attendance will be able to enroll during Phase 2 and later.

Co-enrollment in both Biology 1A and Biology 1AL at the same time (in the same cart) is required. The enrollment system will require this as the courses are co-requisites of each other. Failure to be enrolled in one will result in failure to be enrolled in both classes.

Because of the co-requisite requirement, the waitlists do not work. There will be no waitlists used for this class.

Course pre-requisites will be be strictly enforced by the enrollment system. Students not meeting the pre-requisites will not be able to enroll.

Time conflicts are not allowed.

The Course Materials Fee is $50.

This class will be held via combined Remote and In-Person Instruction.
Lectures will be held via Remote Instruction.
Pre-recorded lecture videos will be made available on bCourses.
M 5-6:30 sections will be optional synchronous Q&A sessions with three quizzes scheduled during the semester at this time.
These will be recorded and are not required, except when quizzes are scheduled.
Lab sections will be held In-Person.
The Lab Exam will be held In-Person.

The first In-Person Lab Section meeting will be during the week of January 23rd.

Quizzes will be during the Monday 5-6:30 Lecture on the following tentative dates:
Quiz 1 - Monday February 27, 6:10-6:40pm
Quiz 2 - Monday March 13, 6:10-6:40pm
Quiz 3 - Monday April 10, 6:10-6:40pm

Exam for Spring 2023 (In-Person):

Lab Exam: Wednesday, April 26, 7-9 p.m. (Tentative)

Do not schedule any conflicts with exams. No Make-up exams or alternate times will be possible.

Students are expected to be able to attend all class meetings and exams. Class schedule time conflicts will not be accommodated. If you have a time conflict allowed by another course, that course must accommodate any conflict issues.

Requisites

  • Prerequisite: CHEM 1A with minimum grades of C-; or CHEM 4A with minimum grade of C-; or AP Chem with minimum score of 4; or Chem HL IB with minimum score of 5; or GCE A-Level Chem with minimum grade of C. Corequisite: BIOLOGY 1A. Recommended: CHEM 3A or CHEM 12A with minimum grade of C-.
