Course Catalog Description

This is a student-initiated course to be offered for academic credit. The subject matter will vary from semester to semester and will be taught by the student facilitator under the supervision of the faculty sponsor. Topics to be related to art practice.

Class Description

This is an entry course in the language, processes, and media of visual art. Coursework will be organized around weekly lectures and studio problems that will introduce students to the nature of art-making and visual thinking. Students will expand their critical thinking abilities and develop visual literacy skills through self-generated projects as well as in-group assignments, and critical class engagements. Throughout this course, students will utilize their autobiography to complete a visual journal guided by the literary concept of Biomythography. Through the recording of questions and daily observations, students will examine ways to visually incorporate their personal vocabulary and communal customs while exploring notions of representation through different cultural lenses. Through weekly entries into their sketchbooks, students will engage their camera phones in the sourcing, recording, and archiving of conceptually and physically challenging images and ideas that they encounter on their daily commutes. Using this archive of images as source material students will explore unconventional ways of creating images (i.e., collage and/or texts as graphic devices) through weekly journal drawings. Students will work as a community to build new methods for viewing, understanding, evaluating, and discussing 2D media and representations of identity.
