Course Catalog Description
Advanced study in modern sociology. The specific topics will be announced at the beginning of each semester.
Class Description
Haunted by its early relationship with eugenics and nativist movements, the academic field of demography—especially its most mainstream elements—has worked to project a nonpolitical and scientific image. As a result, it has traditionally emphasized methods over theory and technical expertise over reflexivity. This course digs past this veneer to consider and confront the politics of demography, paying particular attention to the role of race/racism and modern statecraft. With this orientation, the course 1) examines the contingent and consequential development of the field of demography, 2) explores the making and mobilization of "demographic populations," 3) reflects on the political and ethical implications of demographic knowledge, 4) and engages with critical and decolonial alternatives.
