Course Catalog Description

Specialized topics in Social Inequalities that are not regularly offered in the curriculum may occasionally be offered under this number. The focus of the course will vary depending on the instructor in charge. The survey course in Social Inequalities, 130, is recommended before taking this course.

Class Description

This course suggests a new take on an old concept- the “sociological imagination”-by engaging with the two pressing concerns of the 21st century, the environment and global society. Combining these two concepts gives us the “environmental sociological imagination” which enables us to situate the self and society within a world ecology. Over the course of the semester, we will investigate various theories of capitalism, externalities, consumption, risk, governance, the corporation, alternative economies, and the relationships between the self, the local, and the global. The essential components to be completed for credit are readings, class discussions, quizzes, and exams.
