Class Description
If we could define what characterizes contemporary Brazilian literature today, we could spotlight its state of rupture. Contemporary literature has not only put into question previous literary canons, but has more centrally put into question the very significance of a unified canon in order claim a diversity of systems and traditions that have long been suppressed by the official literary landscape. Dissident aesthetic and political movements have provoked calls for a revision across various nodes of power in the literary field—from literary festivals such as the annual FLIP (International Literary Festival of Paraty), to awards, prestigious institutions, individual and collective curating—and driven a transformation is Brazil’s contemporary literature. Throughout this course we will analyze this dynamic contemporary literary field. We will spotlight works by women, Afro-Brazilian, Indigenous, and non heteronormative authors; those from regions of Brazil typically underrepresented in mainstream literary circuits; among others advancing contemporary literature’s provocative languages.
Among other new voices, we will examine the texts and contributions of Geovani Martins, Edimilson de Almeida Pereira, Conceição Evaristo, Itamar Vieira Júnior, Carla Madeira, Carola Saavedra, Uyra Sodoma, Luciany Aparecida, Veronica Stigger, Allan da Rosa, Micheliny Verunschk, Jarrid Arraes, Cristiano Aguiar, Jefferson Tenório, Floresta, Regina Azevedo, Davi Nunes , Stephanie Borges, Davi Kopenawa, Amara Moira, Miriam Alves, Luiza Romão, Tatiana Pequeno, Marília Garcia, Ricardo Aleixo, Angélica Freitas, Luiz Mauricio Azevedo, além de revisitarmos Gilberto Freire, Oswald de Andrade, Lélia Gonzalez, Machado de Assis, Mário de Andrade, Carolina Maria de Jesus, Augusto de Campos, Wally Salomão, e outros.
