Course Catalog Description
For majors and non-majors. A study of issues in the history of music and sound. Topic will vary from class to class.
Class Description
Love songs accounted for much of the poetry and music composed at the courts and urban centers of medieval Europe. In this course we will explore the world of medieval love and the social interactions conducted in its name, from the chivalrous and courtly to the corporeal and even obscene. While we will encounter some aspects of “love” that are worlds apart from our own, others will feel surprisingly familiar. Students will acquire tools for analyzing medieval poetry and music, and through such analysis will explore the interactions between literal and allegorical, sacred and profane, and ascetic and erotic elements in medieval culture. No previous musical experience is required, and all readings will be in English.
