Class Description

Market design seeks to translate economic theory and analysis into practical solutions to real-world problems. This course will focus on the mathematical foundations of many potential and successful market design applications. We will explore settings from public school choice to kidney exchange, from spectrum auctions to refugee resettlement, from electricity markets to the allocation of food to food banks. We will visit several areas of microeconomic theory from social choice to mechanism design to general equilibrium theory and along the way discover and apply many lovely mathematical results.

Class Notes

Prerequisites:

For advanced undergraduates: familiarity with game theory is essential. Real analysis, combinatorics, linear/convex programming, probability theory might be helpful.

A short presentation on a research topic relevant to the course is expected at the end.
