Course Catalog Description
Introduction to earthquakes, their causes and effects. General discussion of basic principles and methods of seismology and geological tectonics, distribution of earthquakes in space and time, effects of earthquakes, and earthquake hazard and risk, with particular emphasis on the situation in California.

Lecture Format: Earthquakes in your backyard will be delivered in a hybrid mode in Fall 2023 (just as in Fall 2022). Lecture Format: Earthquakes in your backyard will be delivered in a hybrid mode in Fall 2023 (just as in Fall 2022). The lectures will be delivered in-person by Prof Allen Tu Th 11-12:30 in 245 Li Ka Shing. The lectures will simultaneously be broadcast via zoom, and will also be recorded via course capture for later viewing in bcourses. It does not matter which section you sign up for (EPS C20, LS C70Y) you can choose to attend in person, join the zoom, or watch the video later.
Midterm and Final: The midterm and the final exam will both be given online and must be taken at the defined time. The midterm will be in the usual class time slot, and the final will be at the time specified by campus for the class.
