Course Catalog Description

Directed group study on various topics in design innovation.

Class Description

This course aims to provide students with a foundation in fundamental engineering principles through the lens of designing a fully functional remote-controlled airplane. The course will consist of three primary sections: the engineering design process, aerodynamics, structural analysis. Relevant manufacturing processes will also be covered periodically throughout the semester to provide a hands-on experience for students. These activities will be conducted in the Jacobs Makerspace in affiliation with the Jacobs Institute for Design. The course is associated with the Aerospace SAE competition team, and while students are strongly encouraged to contribute to the team, participation is not required for DeCal students. Students will learn course material through a combination of lectures, in-class exercises, and projects. By the end of the course, students should have a fundamental understanding of aircraft design and underlying engineering principles that can be applied in various fields. They will also understand the application of various design and analysis tools, including hand calculations, MATLAB, SolidWorks, and ANSYS.
