Course Catalog Description
An intensive, accelerated course satisfying concurrently the requirements of the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement and the first half of Reading and Composition. Instruction in writing a range of discourse forms and in the revision of papers.
Class Description
Language is so ordinary that its complexity and impact on society are often overlooked or underestimated. Linguistic variation is vast and the differences between languages and dialects are both arbitrary and profoundly meaningful. What we believe and how we feel about our own and others’ use of language deserves attention and interrogation. In this class, we will explore the connection of language to identity and structures of power through scholarly, journalistic, and literary works. Students will reflect on the intersection of these areas in their own lives, as well as at educational institutions and in society at-large. We will also engage with film and other media to deepen course learning.
