Course Catalog Description
The purpose of this course is to further develop students' Armenian proficiency in all four language skills, using discussion, oral presentations, written assignments, and a variety of readings (literature, non-fiction, folklore, newspaper articles, etc.) chosen partly for their cultural significance and partly based on student needs and interests. Emphasis on particular skills (e.g. reading) depending on student needs and interests.
Class Description
Armenian 101A is designed for students with a diverse range of language proficiencies, from second-year language learners to heritage speakers to those formally educated in the language. The course emphasizes reading and analyzing literature (fictional prose, drama, and poetry) as a means of language acquisition. Students will hone their language skills through discussions, written assignments, and a variety of creative group activities. While students choose whether they wish to write and speak in Eastern or Western Armenian, they also learn to navigate both literary standards with greater ease.
Course may be repeated for credit.
Texts: All readings will be made available on bCourses. Selections will be determined based on student proficiency.
Textbook for second-year language learners only: Practical Textbook of Western Armenian by Haroutiun Kurkjian (any edition). Available at abrilbooks.com and Amazon, ASIN B003IGI1P4.
Requirements: weekly homework (reading and writing assignments); performative reading of a play; journaling; class participation; weekly reading aloud recordings; presentation; and take-home final exam.
