Course Catalog Description

Special Topics courses offer students opportunities for more concentrated focus beyond general curriculum offerings. Courses may align with an instructor’s own research, they may propose topics responding to contemporary events and issues, or they may offer a specialized skill. Primarily intended for advanced undergraduates and graduates in Art Practice but open to others.

Class Description

Expanded Painting is an exploration of the creative boundaries of painting. Students will continue to develop their visual and technical abilities through a diverse set of projects that investigate process, surface, materiality, scale, and meaning in painting. Early assignments will encourage growth in paint media, layering and techniques as later assignments will focus on a deeper understanding between concept, imagery and materials. Research and studio experimentation will be incorporated throughout the course to support your ideas that may range from abstraction, landscape, to figuration. Materials will include oil and acrylic paint and mediums as well as found or alternative media. Students will also be encouraged to question and go beyond the traditional rectangular form of the canvas. This studio-based class will include technical demos, lectures, individual and group critiques, studio work, guest lectures and discussion of readings and contemporary painting.
