Course Catalog Description
This course is devoted to training students in methods of ethnographic field film production. Based on the previous coursework in Anthro 138A, students will work toward the production of an ethnographic video from elected project proposals. In addition to weekly discussions of student projects, guest consultants and lecturers will lend their expertise on aspects of production as well as editing.
Class Description
This course is devoted to exploring and understanding ethnographic research methods and modes of presentation that privilege the use of audio-visual media (film,
photography, sound recording, graphic arts, inter alia). Building on prior coursework in Anthro 138A, students will pursue research projects using photography, sound recording, and video, leading to the production of a media-based short form ethnography. The course will bring attention to ethnographic project design and field methods together with studio-based collaborative mediamaking, as well as advanced consideration of ethnographic film and related experimental media work in adjacent fields of film studies, art practice, and architecture and urban design. In
addition to weekly discussion of student projects, film screenings, and course readings, the course will draw on guest lecturers and ethnographers with expertise in different aspects of audio recording and sound design, video
production, and editing.
