Reading and composition in connection with the study of dramatic literature. R1A satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement, and R1B satisfies the second half.
Class Description
What is fat? How did it come to hold the meaning it is given in the contemporary moment? How does fat interact with other social identities—such as race, class, gender and more—and how do these identities, in turn, shape how fat bodies are interpreted? In this class, we will trace the development of the idea of fatness in the Western world to assess its production as the ultimate specter of ill health and early death.
Using Fat Studies texts as a primary source, students will develop their writing skills, including: language selection, paper structure, how to develop a thesis, and how to best utilize the basic functions of writing to strengthen and communicate an argument.
