Class Description

In the era of human rights, gendered violence in political conflict is considered an abhorrent violation. Why and why now? Why, when sexual violence in wartime has been an occurrence of war from antiquity to the present? How, when sexual violence is an occurencce across time and space, in peace and war, with private and public dimensions. In this course, we will attempt to explore the literature on gendered violence in political conflict focusing mainly on conflict-related sexual violence. Other forms of gendered violence will be discussed as well. Theories and cases from the disciplines of Political Science, Feminist Law, Sociology and others will be used to understand how conflict-related sexual violence, and gendered violence more broadly, come to be understood, adjudicated, and influence socio-political relationships; we will try to understand the benefits and detriments of this scholarship as interventionists attempt to prevent gendered violence in political conflict.
