Course Catalog Description
In the context of inter-Scandinavian communication, students will acquire the oral proficiency necessary to function in authentic situations of language use with respect to grammatical, functional, and sociolinguistic skills in their own target language (Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish). Students will read and interpret literary and nonliterary texts from a cultural cross-cultural perspective. Workload: Four hours of work outside class per week with one hour of communicative class work assigned on bCourses. Oral and written midterm, a final project, and a final oral and written exam.
Class Description
This course is a continuation of SCANDIN 100A (taught in the fall semester). Its goal is to further develop students’ communicative competence in all four foreign language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) within a cultural context in their own target language (Danish, Norwegian, or Swedish). Through a common weekly lecture, students will also gain a deeper understanding of the other Scandinavian languages. Students will not be asked to learn to speak the other two Scandinavian languages, but to learn about them.
The weekly SCANDIN 100B lecture will focus on Scandinavian emigration to America and present-day Scandinavian language communities in the US. We will continue to probe into Scandinavian linguistics and language history and explore what these languages have in common and how they differ. The biweekly discussion sections will continue to further the student’s competencies within their chosen target language.
Students should enroll in the relevant target language section as follows:
Section 101 = Danish
Section 102 = Norwegian
Section 103 = Swedish.
Students should register in the 100B lecture in addition to the relevant section they will attend. The course is complete with the language and the lecture sections – you must enroll in both parts in order to fully enroll in the course. If you experience a scheduling problem it is essential that you consult the language coordinator.
Prerequisites: Scandinavian 100A with a passing grade, or consent of instructor. Course cannot be repeated without prior consent from the department language coordinator.
Cross Campus Enrollment: Students at other UC campuses can join this class online. SCANDIN 100B is a Distance Learning Course transmitted simultaneously to specific UC campuses. UCB is the home campus with live class instruction; other UC students will participate through a live video feed.

Please note that the Concurrent Enrollment application must be approved by the department. Approval is based on availability of space in the class; enrolled UC students on a waitlist have priority.
