Course Catalog Description

Reading and composition course based on works by Italians and foreigners about Italy and its culture and by Italians about their distinctive experiences of other cultures as tourists and emigrants. Works studied will be primarily chosen from among fiction and non fiction narratives, both originally in English and translated into it. R5A satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition Requirement and R5B satisfies the second half.

Class Description

What is landscape? How does landscape contribute to narrative? You may consider topography, geography, or built environment to identify a landscape. Others may associate a particular landscape with an image, a tourist destination, a language, or even a memory. Our course will approach these questions by thinking how landscape is inscribed, revised, and imagined in literature. Many, though not all, of the materials in this course will focus on Italy as a landscape that has been revised through migration, memory, and travel. Students will engage with various genres including travel writing, poetry, and the novel. Materials for this course will include works by Elizabeth Bishop, Amara Lakhous, Elena Ferrante, Italo Calvino, Henry James, and others. This class fulfills the university’s first semester requirement for Reading and Composition. As such, this is a writing-intensive course that focuses on building an essential skill: the argumentative academic essay. Assignments will focus on close reading and literary analysis. Over the course of the semester, we will work on developing persuasive and complex written arguments through journal entries, drafting, and revision.
