Class Description
This writing-intensive course aims to strengthen your writing skills, thus strong emphasis is given to the process of writing, reviewing and re-writing your work and that of your peer. You will experiment writing in different genres and styles, including personal narratives, journalism, literary analysis, research essay, etc.
Italian 101 is a prerequisite for all upper division courses taught in Italian.
Taught in Italian.
Required of all majors, and minors in the Italian Studies track.
The thematic content of ITAL 101 changes every semester. Each theme is discussed and analysed through a variety of written and visual texts.
The theme for Spring 2022 is “Italy from 1946 to today”. We will focus on some of the main events that shaped Italian society and culture from the end of WWII on, from the first free elections after twenty years of dictatorship, to the brief economic boom, from the “leaden years” of terrorism, to the fall of the “first republic”. We’ll read newspaper articles, essays, excerpts from novels, and poems; we’ll listen to songs and watch newsreels and archived footage, as well as feature films from the different time periods.
You will write regularly both short and longer texts, using different styles and registers. At the end of the semester you will have created a portfolio of about 20-30 pages in Italian. Grammar will be reviewed only in the context of the texts and genres analysed.
The course is entirely taught in Italian and it is a prerequisite to any 100-level course in Italian.
Prerequisites: Italian Studies 4 at UCB or proficiency placement /permission of the instructor
IS 101 can be repeated for elective credit if the content is sufficiently different from the previous offering.
