Class Description

This research seminar is designed for graduate students working on any aspect of European History from 1500 to the present. It is open to all students, whether they are writing a 285 research paper for the first time or writing dissertation chapters. The seminar will walk participants through the steps of writing an article-length paper or chapter, beginning with how to formulate a research question, how to start and how to end a paper or chapter, and how to make most effective use of your sources. We will meet weekly during the first six sessions, as you create an abstract, a short introduction to a primary source, a tentative outline for the paper or chapter, and draft the first three pages. We will then shift to individual consultations. Toward the end of the semester, we will reconvene as a group to exchange rough drafts. In case you are writing a dissertation, please prepare a tentative chapter synopsis for our first meeting.
