Class Description
This course will focus on a decolonial reading of Contemporary Xicanx Art history, looking back at the past six decades of artistic production and its’ precolonial influences. We will concentrate on the study of the art of the Chicano/a Movements, the Multicultural era, Post-Chicano/a Art and Xicanx art of today to understand the connections between art and politics in an oppressed community at specific junctures and located times. Studying the artistic methodologies developed during the Movement era (1960s/1970s), we will focus on how these influenced artists in subsequent generations dealing with new issues that arose in their communities, maintaining a sense of artistic continuity while adjusting for their changing times.
This course fulfills the following Major requirements: Geographical area (C) and Chronological period (III).
