Class Description
In this course, we will develop the skills of writing and reading as tools of research. We will examine the history of documentary films in Latin America and the Caribbean from their earlier productions to the present. Rather than focusing on major industries (Mexico, Argentine, Brazil), this approach will try to decenter the traditional analysis of this genre by attending to the aesthetic similarities that joint many of its masterpieces beyond nationalistic traditions or a presumed attachment to the social context. Consistent communication with our peers and the development of research arguments will be essential to succeed in this course. The selection will also privilege the representation of specific topics (race, gender, diaspora) and filmmakers' particular techniques. This course fulfills the second part of the Reading and Composition requirement, with an emphasis on research. Students will learn to generate research topics, locate and evaluate sources, and write analytically by using the rich Latin American and Caribbean cultural tradition as a framework.
