Course Catalog Description
In addition to class meetings, an extra assignment/research component will be added to the course to increase contact hours with students. Possible components include additional readings, outside-of-class research projects, and any other project which the instructor feels will add to the value of the course. Topics to be announced at the beginning of each semester.
Class Description
This course centers its attention on how struggles over land and water are one of the most pressing matters affecting communities across the Americas today. Through readings, movies, sounds, discussions and class projects, we will learn the historical roots of current territorial disputes and what these have to tell us about understandings of culture, land and water. Through these course materials we will discuss the ways in which cultural manifestations like language and art reflect our relation to geographies and their ecologies across different nation-state borders. Finally, this seminar will provide a comparative view of how different peoples have mobilized to reclaim and protect their right to land, water and life.
