Course Catalog Description
Freshman and sophomore seminars offer lower division students the opportunity to explore an intellectual topic with a faculty member and a group of peers in a small-seminar setting. These seminars are offered in all campus departments; topics vary from department to department and from semester to semester.
Class Description
Students have an opportunity to learn about the Earth through direct field observation. The main part is a 4-day field trip that introduces a variety of geological issues ranging from evolution of California, rock-forming processes, earthquakes, environmental concerns, mining and water management. Tent and sleeping bag needed. Freshmen and sophomores only!
The 4-day field trip is tentatively planned for April 21-24 (Thursday-Sunday). We plan to explore the Northern Sierra Nevada. Be prepared for some rather primitive camping and strenuous hikes (but no backpacking). You must attend the field trip or you will receive an F grade.
There are three mandatory lectures Wednesdays 5:10-6pm in 325 McCone: January 19, 2022 (organizational meeting, attend also if you are on waiting list), January 26 (introduction to Earth sciences) and February 2 (geology of California).
Also, we will have a meeting on field trip logistics the week before the fieldtrip (Wednesday April 6, 5:10 p.m.).
