The first in a two-semester sequence of Introductory Ukrainian. This course aims to provide a solid foundation in Ukrainian in four major communicative skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students learn to communicate effectively and sensitively across cultural and linguistic boundaries while developing knowledge of and respect for the language, traditions, and beliefs of Ukrainian people. Cultural awareness will be enhanced with authentic audio-visual materials, literary texts, and cultural artifacts. By the end of the 1A course, students will be able to read short original Ukrainian texts and communicate about basic subjects.

Ukrainian 1A is the first in a two-semester sequence of Introductory Ukrainian. This course provides a solid foundation in Ukrainian by teaching four major communicative skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Students learn to communicate effectively and sensitively across cultural and linguistic boundaries while developing knowledge of and respect for the language, traditions, and beliefs of Ukrainian people. Stressing the interdependence of language and culture, the course familiarizes students with the culture and history of Ukraine. Cultural awareness will be enhanced with authentic audio-visual materials, literary texts, and cultural artifacts. Additionally, students will be guided in their exploration of aspects of Ukrainian language and culture that are of particular interest to them (e.g., history, politics, literature, etc.). By the end of the 1A course, students will be able to read short original Ukrainian texts and communicate about basic subjects. Texts: to be announced No prerequisites.

Effective July 8, this class will be conducted via synchronous online instruction in Fall 2022. Time conflict enrollments are not permitted.
