Course Catalog Description
Principally devoted to Zoroastrianism and Manicheanism but with some attention to Indo-Iranian origins, and relevance of Iranian religion for the history of Hellenistic Gnosticism, Judaism, and Islam.
Class Description
This course introduces students to the religions of ancient Iran, focusing primarily on the forms of Zoroastrianism which arose under the Achaemenids and flourished under the Sasanians. It also explores other religions of late antique Iran, including Eastern Christianity, Babylonian Judaism, Mandaeism, and Manichaeism, as well as the beginnings of Islam in Iran.
