Class Description
Fundamentals of Blockchain Technology is a comprehensive survey of relevant topics in blockchain offered through the UC Berkeley Decal program. You do not need any prior Computer Science background or knowledge to take this course, just a willingness to learn! From a technological standpoint, we start with the basics of cryptography and economics, establish a solid fundamental understanding of blockchains and Bitcoin by building them from the bottom up, and from there, explore the myriad of ideas and technologies relating to blockchain technology. On the non-technical side, we start with the history of digital currency, then look at the laws, organizations, trends, and communities behind it to build a complete picture of the ecosystem surrounding blockchain technology.
This year, we are offering a variable unit option (1 or 2) to allow students flexibility with their workload in this course and to reflect the time that students often take to learn more about blockchain technology outside of the class. In addition to the requirements for the 1 unit version of the class, students who are taking the class for 2 units would also be required to submit a mid-semester paper as a checkpoint for their Final Paper. This will be peer-reviewed and form a part of their final grade in the class.
