Course Catalog Description
Students will develop the basic elements of communicative competence in both spoken and written language within a cultural context.
Class Description
Danish is spoken by about six million people, principally in Denmark, Greenland, the Faroe Islands and in the region of Southern Schleswig in northern Germany. Written Danish has many similarities to English, due to common linguistic origins and continuous co-development. As an English speaker you will quickly be able to build vocabulary and read simple texts in Danish. Pronunciation, on the other hand, can be a little more tricky, but don’t worry! The class has a strong emphasis on speaking and expressing yourself in everyday situations, and you will be guided through the intricacies of the soft D’s and guttural R’s of spoken Danish.
Classes meet for three hours of Danish instruction per week. You will acquire basic communicative competence in all four foreign language skills (speaking, listening, reading and writing) within a cultural context. The aim is to enable you to express yourself in regard to topics such as hobbies and interests, food and grocery shopping, family and friends, and everyday life. We will also explore Danish society and popular culture by watching films and reading newspapers and magazines, to further your abilities to interact with cultural competence and understanding. We will discuss how Danish language skills can be used beyond the classroom through conversations with Danish speaking visitors invited to join us in class.
By the end of the first day, you will already be able to speak some Danish and realize how cool, beautiful and interesting (and yes, also challenging) the Danish language is! Vi ses snart! (See you soon).
