Course Catalog Description
Topics to be announced at beginning of each semester. No more than 3 units may be taken in one section.
Class Description
This courses focuses on project delivery, from start to finish, including the following ten elements:
1. Project Objectives
2. Project Life cycle
3. Project Screening
4. Project Team Organization
5. Phased implementation of large programs
6. Project Management Tools
7. Project Performance Metrics
8. Development of Functional or performance-based specifications
9. Project Delivery Contracts and close out
10. Effective testing and roll-out / operations and maintenance
The course weaves these ten elements, focusing on the differences, challenges and opportunities of project management from the private and public sector perspectives and the interfaces between the two; and impact on project cost, schedule, and quality. It is aimed at graduate students and upper level undergraduate students interested in learning critical tools used in project management.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
Learning: Using a collaborative learning community, participants will become familiar with the thinking and tools for successful project management that facilitates their transition into professionals dedicated to supporting effective and efficient project delivery principles, sharing best practices.
Knowledge and Practice: Participants will gain a fundamental knowledge of stakeholder management principles and practices to address environmental justice and public hearing requirements and how to incorporate scope changes into the project delivery budget and schedule.
Integration: Participants will have a greater sense of how to integrate project goals with the available resources and inspire / promote innovative solutions for better results.
Influence: Participants will build new “muscles” of listening, collaboration, leadership and enhance their capacity to step out into the world in a more powerful way to inspire maximum creativity and innovation.
FORMAT:
This workshop will meet six times for three-hours each. Each meeting will involve a mix of lectures, group work, and group presentations. The course will require team work and submission of assignments. The emphasis will be on hands on projects which will be picked during the first meeting. Students will be assigned to teams in the first meeting, and teams will work on a specific project.
COURSE LEAD:
Shari Tavaf is Founder and CEO of STRADA E.C., LLC., an executive consulting firm on transportation. Through her work, Shari supports many transportation agencies as a liaison to the state government and working with executive teams on long term strategic and organizational goals. Her years in local transportation have provided her with high level relationships with many important executives as well as members of several board of directors and commissions. In 2021, she was named Senior Fellow by the Institute of Transportation Studies at UC Berkeley. She is a graduate of UC Berkeley.
