Course Catalog Description
This course will focus on topics in the history, theory and aesthetics of sound cinema.
Class Description
Black Film and Visual Culture focuses on transatlantic black filmic and artistic movements, genres, and practices, with an eye towards situating their significance within the modern world. It addresses the politics, aesthetics, and historical conditions that continue to inform the intersections of blackness, gender, sexuality, and class. We will think about the visualization of desire, sexuality, and erotic identification, and the political implications of exploring these themes, particularly with respect to black embodiment. We will think about how cinema and contemporary post-cinematic art practices inherit and share themes of resistance and struggle. Students will learn how these analytics can be brought to bear on the aesthetic significance and cultural development of diverse yet interconnected Black diasporic film and art traditions.
