Class Description
“Touch the wooden gate in the wall you never
saw before.
Say "please" before you open the latch,
go through,
walk down the path.” – “Instructions” by Neil Gaiman
The world of fiction is dominated by depictions of journeys to the Otherworld: the inhabitance of the fantastic and the realm of magic. From Narnia to Hogwarts, human interaction with Faerie dominates the stories we tell ourselves. The same may be said about narrative interests in medieval Scandinavia. Why are we so fascinated by the fantastic? Why were medieval authors equally as interested in journeys into the perilous realms of dragons, elves, and giants? In this course, we will seek to answer these questions, as well as analyze how such depictions of the fantastic manifest themselves. In so doing, we will develop critical and analytic thinking skills, hone thesis-writing techniques, and analyze the forms and strategies of compelling writing. Together, we will investigate the interplay between the content, style, and organization in our own writing. Our aim will be to develop and practice reading, critical analysis, and composition with an eye towards academic research. As such, we will discuss the use of secondary sources, citation, and critique.
