Course Catalog Description

Students will learn the fundaments of healthy singing. The classical style will be learned and applied to other styles of singing. Students will receive group instruction and individual feedback throughout the semester. Singers will perform two solos: one in English and one in a foreign language. The course is open to all undergraduates. Students involved in campus vocal ensembles are encouraged to enroll. No prior music experience required.

Class Description

With over a year of social distancing and self isolation in the rearview mirror, it is sometimes difficult to find your true voice! Music 44 can be taken synchronously or asynchronously and is an engaging and exciting study of the mechanics and science of the singing voice. Students will study the fundamental techniques needed to take their singing to the next level! Remote, online Zoom lectures and dynamic learning modules mixed with group and one on one Zoom intensive instruction sessions and masterclasses - students anywhere in the world can participate in live or asynchronous interactive learning with an expert instructor. Examine and practice the western classical technique of singing and how to apply it to a range of vocal music styles from pop and R&B to musical theater and opera. Basic theory and performance practices will be covered as well. Students will study with Nikolas Nackley, a renowned professional performing artist and the director of the UC Berkeley Department of Music's Vocal Studies Program. Expert guest speakers and master teachers will also present during classes. Learn and work on new songs and repertoire types and perform in a virtual recital, virtual chorus, and other exciting events such as online "UC Berkeley Idol" and "The Voice, Berkeley" style informal and pressure free activities.
