Course Catalog Description
Bioinspired design views the process of how we learn from Nature as an innovation strategy translating principles of function, performance and aesthetics from biology to human technology. The creative design process is driven by interdisciplinary exchange among engineering, biology, art, architecture and business. Diverse teams of students will collaborate on, create, and present original bioinspired design projects. Lectures discuss biomimicry, challenges of extracting principles from Nature, scaling, robustness, and entrepreneurship through case studies highlighting robots that run, fly, and swim, materials like gecko-inspired adhesives, artificial muscles, medical prosthetic devices, and translation to start-ups.

The Bioinspired Design lectures are asynchronous (i.e. video recorded in advance), so you can succeed in this class from any time zone. Students will be able to submit questions for every lecture. Synchronous, virtual connection sessions in which Professor Full answers questions or brings in guests will be offered. Students who attend these sessions synchronously will be able to interact and connect with their classmates and the instructor/guests in real time. These sessions will still be recorded for later viewing, so synchronous attendance is not required. Friday discussions will be held in a large physical location, 310 Jacobs Hall, when possible. This large space can accommodate a limited number of enrolled students each week. If you are in Berkeley and would like to attend in person, we hope that you will have the opportunity to at least attend some sessions. One or two students per group (6 groups per discussion period) will hopefully be allowed to attend in person each week to complete hands-on design projects, while other students available during that discussion period will watch, make suggestions, and participate with their group via Zoom. Students who cannot attend the sections synchronously can watch the video recordings of their own groups and other groups if they wish at a more convenient time for them. All in-person activities are subject to change. Safety always comes first. We are exploring virtual submission of design jobs to Jacobs’ staff, as well both pickup and possible mailing of design kits. No student will be required to attend in-person sessions. No student will be disadvantaged for any choice they make regarding their safety or mode of participation.
