Course Catalog Description

Designed to be taken in conjunction with the Foundations of Data Science (COMPSCI/INFO/STAT C8) course, each connector course will flesh out data science ideas in the context of one particular field. Blending inferential thinking and computational thinking, the course relies on the increasing availability of datasets across a wide range of human endeavor, and students' natural interest in such data, to teach students to work actively with data in a field of their interest and to interpret and critique their analyses of data. Topics vary by field, and several topics will be offered each term.

Class Description

Communication is a critical yet often overlooked part of data science. This course aims to help you learn how to write about data insights in a way that is both compelling and faithful to the data. You will gain an “ear” for writing by reading the work of others. You will learn how to distill findings into an accessible story, and organize and revise the story. You will also gain experience writing clearly, concisely, and precisely for broad audiences. Exercises include: writing captions for figures, data descriptions, and annotations for storyboards; editing statistical statements for simplicity and accuracy; and drafting and revising short data stories.

Class Notes

The class will meet Tuesday and Thursday as a seminar, with the Friday section serving as a writing lab. The course will be asynchronous with Zoom recordings and will allow time conflicts.

Data C8 (CS/Stat/Info C8) is a pre/co-requisite for this course. The class should be taken for 3.0.. show more
