Course Catalog Description

Reading and composition in connection with the representation of Scandinavia by outsiders and insiders. Satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement.

Class Description

This course offers an introduction into the world of medieval Iceland through one of its most striking literary genres: the family saga. These narratives, read in translation, capture the trials and tribulations of those eking out a living in a harsh land against the dramatic backdrop of the Viking Age. Topics include the founding of the Icelandic Commonwealth, the discovery of the New World, the pagan religion and conversion to Christianity, the strong role of women in Norse society, and the constant tension between violent feud and the law. Brimming with memorable characters and rich in both drama and humor, the sagas remain an enduring legacy of the Middle Ages – a tapestry of the human condition that still resonates today. The aim of this course is to help students further their skills in reading, analysis and composition. Coursework will focus on close reading, developing original arguments, working with textual evidence, drafting and revising, and producing a strong final essay. Texts: The Sagas of the Icelanders (Penguin, ISBN: 978-0141000039)
