Class Description
Palestine has been the subject of many claims in the modern period. This seminar explores how various modern Arab authors have claimed, imagined and represented Palestine in their texts. Whether as pastoral bliss, a site of anti-colonial struggle, a modern-day Al-Andalus, a meeting place between heaven and earth, a frontier between East and West, Palestine has served as fertile ground for a great many compelling narratives in Arabic. This seminar studies texts from various genres in modern Arab literary history, and considers the aesthetic and thematic questions they raise. Knowledge of Arabic is not required.
