Course Catalog Description
This course introduces students to key vocabularies, forms, and histories from the many arts and design disciplines represented at UC Berkeley. It is conceived each year around a central theme that responds to significant works and events on the campus, providing an introduction to the many art and design resources available to students on campus. Students will compare practices from across the fields of visual art, film, dance, theater, music, architecture, graphic design, new media, and creative writing, and explore how different artists respond formally to the central themes of the course, considering how similar questions and arguments are differently addressed in visual, material, embodied, sonic, spatial, and linguistic forms.
Class Description
This course introduces students to key vocabularies, strategies, and histories from the many creative disciplines at UC Berkeley. It is conceived each year around a central theme that responds to significant works and events on the campus, providing an introduction to the many art and design resources available to students locally.
This fall course is about 'Creativity and Practice' as a vital resource in times of change. Together we focus on a central question: Why do we create?
World-renowned Berkeley faculty creators in practices ranging from biology to art, from poetry to data science, and from dance to robotics will provide many different answers.
The speakers will share different views on creativity in their fields, and also establish common ground in their shared motivations to do social good, achieve personal fulfillment, and advance the constant process of cultural change.
In dialog with these leaders, students will hone their own creativity in weekly creative exercises based on the lectures. They will discuss their works with each other in small group sections. Agility, curiosity, originality, uncertainty and risk tolerance will be at the center of these creative assignments.
The course will be offered in Fall 2021 in conjunction with Berkeley Arts + Design’s highly successful public lecture series A+D Thursdays at BAMPFA.
