The Biology 1B lectures will be delivered live, remotely MWF 8-9 AM PT. All lectures will be recorded and posted following the live lecture. We hope that you will take the opportunity to join the live lecture remotely, so you can share questions and ideas with the instructor and your classmates. This will support your success in the course.
This class will be held via combined remote and in-person instruction
• Lectures will be held via remote instruction
• Exams will be held in-person
• Labs will be held in-person
Lecture Exams for Fall 2021 (In-person):
• Midterm 1: Wednesday, September 29, 7-8:15 PM
• Midterm 2: Monday, October 25, 7-8:15 PM
• Midterm 3: Tuesday, November 30, 7-8:15 PM
• Final Exam: Monday, December 13, 7:00 to 10:00 pm
Do not schedule any conflicts with these times, as there are no alternative exam times. Biology 1B Labs are scheduled to be synchronous and in-person. Attendance is required.
Students are expected to be able to attend all lab meetings and exams. Class schedule time conflicts will not be accommodated. If you have a time conflict allowed by another course, that course must accommodate any conflict issues. Enrollment in another course that meets at the same time is not permitted.
The first In-Person Lab Section will be during the week of August 30th. The deadline for enrolling and for switching sections is 4 PM Friday, August 27, 2021. The early drop deadline, September 3, 2021, applies to this course. Contact biology1b@berkeley.edu with questions about enrollment.
Sections 225 and 226 are designed for students who are especially interested in field biology. These sections meet Tuesdays 2-6 PM (not all Tuesday 2-6 sections are designated as Field Lab Sections) and in addition have an in-person discussion section Thursdays 3-5 PM. Students in these sections complete a field research project in addition to the regular lab exercises. Students who complete the field research component successfully receive two units of Integrative Biology 95 credit.
Admittance to the field section labs is only by instructor approval. Students must first be registered in the Biology 1B lecture and a regular lab section and then request a field section application. For more information about the field section labs go to ib.berkeley.edu/courses/bio1b/field/fs.htm. Contact biology1b@berkeley.edu for an application.
Textbook:
Campbell Biology 11th or 12th editions are recommended for this course. The links below are for either the 11th edition as a hardcopy with access to online materials including the eText, or eText only access for the 12th edition. When available, we plan to also provide equivalent readings in the free online textbook OpenStax. Only one of these options (either Campbell Biology or OpenStax) is necessary.
Note: If you plan to take Biology 1A in a subsequent semester you may need access to the Campbell Biology online materials (Mastering Biology) at that time.
These plans are contingent upon public health conditions and are subject to change. The course will follow the most current guidelines to prioritize health and safety. show less
