Course Catalog Description
This series covers current topics of research interest in design. The course content may vary semester to semester. Check with the department for current term topics.
Class Description
This course is a fast-paced introduction to a suite of foundational design, prototyping, communication, and technical skills that are essential to a successful career within the design of emerging technologies. It introduces students to design thinking and the basic practices of interaction design. It follows a human-centered design process that includes research, concept generation, prototyping, and refinement. Students will become familiar with design methodologies such as sketching, storyboarding, wireframing, prototyping, etc. It also develops fluency across a range of core technologies and how to operationalize them within a design context. Students must work effectively as individuals and in small teams to design a range of interactive experiences using various technologies.

This course follows a unique format, with a one-week intensive the week before regular UC Berkeley Classes start, on January 13 - January 17 from 10AM to 4PM with a lunch break from 12-1, followed by meetings on Fridays from 10AM - 12PM during the regular semester, from January 24 - May 1 with the exception of University holidays and vacations. All students who enroll must be able to commit to attending these sessions.
This course is targeted at advanced undergraduates and graduate students. Enrollment is by application only. Please return this application form by November 26. Forms received after that date may not be considered.
